Ft. Lauderdale, FL- As Samuel Forrest awaited the birth of his son, he probably never anticipated that the birth would lead to the unraveling of his marriage.

Forrest wife gave birth to the couple’s first son, Leo, in Armenia in late January. But Leo was not a normal infant, and Forrest soon learned his son suffered from Down’s syndrome. What shocked him most though was not his son’s condition, it was what happened next.

After being informed of his son’s condition, Forrester was told he had a choice of whether the wanted to keep the child or not, according to ABC News. In Armenia, parents are given a choice as to whether they want to keep a child suffering from Down syndrome and in Forrester’s situation he did, he wanted to keep his first son despite the challenges.

His wife, however, did not want to keep Leo. It’s a cultural issue that many American’s don’t understand; in Armenia a family with a developmentally disabled child would be shunned.

“They took me in see him and I looked at this guy and I said, he’s beautiful — he’s perfect and I’m absolutely keeping him,” Forrest said. “I got the ultimatum right then. She told me if I kept him then we would get a divorce.”

Forrest told reporters he wanted to take Leo home New Zealand where he will have a support network. He started his own GoFundMe page to collect the funds he needs to move back home and care for his special needs son.

Forrest told reporters his wife wouldn’t talk to him about Leo’s condition nor their divorce.

Leo’s mom confirmed she had a child with Down syndrome and filed for divorce but did not want to discuss the matter any further according to ABC news.

Forrest is just doing what many fathers would do; he is taking on the responsibility of caring for a special needs child, but now he has to face the daunting prospect of a divorce.
