Volusia, FL- It appears that there is some truth to the oft repeated maxim “Happy wife, happy life,” and that the key to a long-lasting marriage lies in how happy the wife. At least that is what a study appearing in the Journal of Marriage and Family found.
For the study, researchers looked at the results of a 2009 national study which focused on income, health and disability, the Deseret News reported. Participants, mostly older couples with an average of 39 years of marriage, were asked how if they and their spouse appreciated one another, if they argued and whether or not their spouse understood their emotions. They were asked to keep a diary of when they felt happy doing mundane daily tasks.
Researchers found that the majority of the couples were satisfied with their marriages. And when one spouse is happy with their marriage it improves the happiness and financial security of the both spouses, according to the Deseret News. Overall, men were more satisfied with their marriages.
Some women expressed unhappiness with their marriage and they were more likely to divorce their spouse. But why is that?
“I think it comes down to the fact that when a wife is satisfied with the marriage she tends to do a lot more for her husband, which has a positive effect on his life,” Deborah Carr, a professor in the Department of Sociology, School of Arts and Science at Rutgers University said in a press release per the Desert News. ”Men tend to be less vocal about their relationships and their level of marital unhappiness might not be translated to their wives.”
A happy marriage, researchers say, correlates with the health and financial well-being of a couple. They also say that women become unhappy when their husbands fall ill because they must assume the stressful role of being a caregiver. When the woman falls ills, the responsibilities as caregiver usually falls on the couple’s children, primarily a daughter.
