Atlanta, GA- Porsha Williams, who stars in the Real Housewives of Atlanta, put on a brave face at Bravo event Wednesday night she talked openly about her divorce from former Steeler Kordell Stewart.
Porsha, 31, was blindsided when her husband of less than two years, filed for divorce on March 22. She didn’t see it coming so she was completely shocked, only finding out about her husband’s filing after it was reported in the media.
While walking the blue carpet at the Bravo event Porsha told US Weekly, “This is a very difficult time for myself and my family. I’m just trying to remain strong. That’s all I can do and stay prayerful and lean on my friends and family.”
Porsha, who is the daughter of civil rights leader Hosea Williams, told the magazine that her family provides her with strength and support.
“Well, when you have strong arms and strong family around you, they cover you – that’s what they’re there for,” she explained to US Weekly. “So that’s who I’m leaning on. And it’s really a blessing to see people, supporters and fans are standing up and just really showing me the love.”
Porsha and her former pro-athlete hubby are relative newcomers to the Real Housewives of Atlanta, but the ups and downs of their marriage were on full display. The couple frequently argued about having children and Porsha’s career choices along with Kordell’s tendency to be controlling, US Weekly reported.
Earlier this week, Porsha filed divorce papers of her own after Kordell said in his divorce petition that she did not need spousal support. According to the Daily Mail, Porsha’s attorney argued that she deserved spousal support since she put her own career on hold to parent Kordell’s child from a previous marriage.
Porsha and Kordell, 40, seemed like the perfect couple when they married in a lavish ceremony, which was featured on WETV’s Platinum weddings, in May of 2011.
Porsha isn’t the first Real Housewives star to be plunged in the middle of a divorce, nor will she be the last. Buzzfeed’s Anna North did some research and number crunching to determine what the divorce rate is for stars of the popular reality show franchise. According to North’s calculations, 51 percent of Real Housewives stars have been divorce at least once, and many of those divorces are played out for the viewing audience. In contrast, the average divorce rate for American women is 22.4 percent.
In her Buzzfeed piece, North got more specific with her Real Housewives statistics, showing which city had the most divorce filings. Housewives stars in the Beverly Hills have the highest rate of divorce at 71.4 percent, and New Jersey is the franchise with lowest rate at 20 percent.
In 2013 there has already been one divorce filing and one separation among the Real Housewives. In February, RH of New Jersey star Dina Manzo announced her separation from her second husband Tommy Manzo in a Tweet.
Last year Bethany Frankel, Real Housewives of New York and Skinny Girls entrepreneur filed for divorce from her husband Jason Hoppy after three years of marriage.
