The once-estranged couple utilized various social media to tell their fans the good news. According to the New York Daily News, Vanessa wrote on Instagram, “We are pleased to announce that we have reconciled. Our divorce actions will be dismissed. We are looking forward to our future together.”
Even though he created the problem for himself, Kobe will now be able to avoid a huge divorce payout. His decade-long marriage with Vanessa has been tumultuous because of his repeated infidelity. Settlements in divorce cases where one spouse cheated on the other can impact the final amount a judge awards to the jilted spouse. Kobe did not have a prenuptial agreement, entitling Vanessa to half of his fortune under California law.
Kobe reportedly cheated on Vanessa with numerous women. She stood by him in 2003 after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 19 year-old woman in a hotel room in Colorado. Kobe told authorities he believed the sex was consensual and the case was later dropped when the young woman decided she didn’t want to go to trial. Vanessa stood by his during this whole affair saying he was only mistake was adultery, according to the Daily News.
In 2005, Kobe sprung for a $50,000 ceremony so he and Vanessa could renew their vows, but that didn’t stop him from his continued womanizing. Kobe’s fame, money, and good looks made women throw themselves at him, and he apparently found their advances irresistible. Rumors began to surface that he would carry on with numerous women while he was on the road with the team.
In December of 2011, Vanessa finally got fed up with her cheating husband and filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences.” She stood to obtain a $75 million settlement – Kobe’s net worth is estimated at $150 million– which included ownership of three luxury homes and primary custody of their two children. Vanessa sold one of the homes in Newport Beach earlier this year.
But the couple was seen together at many Lakers games. Photographers snapped photos of the couple kissing before games. And Kobe was seen leaving games with his family, so the reconciliation process obviously worked for them.
Typically, cheating is one of the primary reasons so many marriages end, especially if there are other problems. Marriages where one or both spouses cheat don’t have a very high survival rate, because it erodes the very foundation of marriage trust. Between 30 and 60 percent of marriages will involve infidelity and it is more common among couples under the age of 30.
Some women can overcome a sexual transgression, but emotional affairs are harder to forgive. Kobe apparently made great efforts to show Vanessa how much he loved her and let’s hope his days as a lothario are over both for his sake and his family’s sake.
