Kim Kardashian, Kayne WestNew York, NY- The internet is all abuzz over Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s extravagant wedding this weekend in Florence, Italy. And while some people are scrambling to see photos of the nearly $2.5 million wedding and wish the newlyweds well, others are wondering “How long the reality star’s third marriage will last?” Kim’s marriage to Kris Humphries only lasted 72 days after all so there is some cynicism about the solidity of marriage her marriage to Kanye. Only time will tell if Kim and Kanye’s marriage will last, but the odds are stacked up against them.

Statistically speaking, second and third marriages don’t have the longevity same longevity of second marriages. According to the Psychology Today, 67 percent of second marriages and 73 percent of third marriages end in divorce. Those are not promising statistics for Kim and Kanye, but it doesn’t necessarily mean their marriage is doomed; the couple has a few things working in their favor that may mean their fairy tale life will last.

Why second and third marriages have a higher chance in ending in divorce is not entirely clear but Psychiatrist Mark Banschick wrote in Psychology Today that second and third nuptials are often “rebound marriages.” Branschick surmises that couples jump into second or third marriages before they’ve had time to work on the issues which led to the demise of their previous marriage or marriages.

Fortunately, Kim and Kanye waited a while before they tied the knot. Kim’s divorce from Kris Humphries was finalized last April after an 18 month duel between divorce attorneys, and many expected Kim and Kanye to rush to the altar. They didn’t which may give their marriage a better chance at success.

They also share a child. In a marriage, especially one with issues, children can be the glue that keeps a couple together and gives them the motivation to work on their problems instead of throwing in the towel at the first sign of trouble.

Many couples enter second or third marriages with children from previous marriages. Since the child is the result from a previous union, tensions between a step-parent and the child can lead to marital problems that may be difficult to overcome. The constant conflict shakes the foundation of an otherwise solid relationship and divorce may be inevitable.

Kanye is also enamored by Kim. The couple has been friends for several years and throughout that time he has patiently waited for his turn to be the man in her life. He told Ryan Seacrest last year, “I just knew I wanted her to be my girl for a long time.” He waited for years before they actually began dating so he may be the glue that holds their relationship together.

Although the New York Post only gave the Kimye wedding a year at most, the couple could surprise everyone and stay together. But if divorce attorneys are the couple’s future, they no doubt had the foresight to draft up rock-solid prenuptial agreement to keep their divorce from getting nasty if it even comes to that.
