Valley Stream, NY- After thirteen years of marriage pop diva Gwen Stefani decided to call it quits on her marriage to Gavin Rossdale, stunning the duo’s fans worldwide.
Stefani filed official divorce documents this week, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the couple’s split. Both parties are allegedly seeking joint custody of their three children and TMZ says Stefani asked not pay spousal support; she’s worth close to $80 million and he is worth about $35 million.
“While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment,” Stefani and Rossdale said in a joint statement to People.
Stefani and Rossdale met when No Doubt and Bush toured together in 1995. After a few years of dating, the couple tied the knot in September 2002. They had one lavish ceremony in London and another one in Los Angeles two weeks later.
Although Stefani and Rossdale kept their relationship relatively private, they made headlines in 2004 when one fashion designer Pearl Lowe announced Rossdale was the father of her then 14-year-old daughter. That revelation almost destroyed their marriage but Stefani and Rossdale remained together and went on to have three children of their own.
Even though, the couple persevered after the love-child scandal, it appears as though their busy lifestyle is at fault for their breakup. A source told TMZ that Stefani was upset about Rossdale being away from home all the time. He toured with his band Bush from December of 2014 to March of this year. She too spends a lot of time touring on top being a judge on “The Voice.”
The source also said Stefani believes Rossdale cheated on her, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
Too much time apart can drive a wedge between two people, and cause their marriage to breakdown. Speaking to Yahoo News, licensed marriage and family therapist David Klow said couples who spend a great deal of time apart lack the physical and intimate contact that is so crucial for a solid relationship or marriage.
According to TMZ, the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, often a costly mistake for celebrity couples. Even in the age of high divorce rates, many New York couples scoff at the notion of signing a prenuptial agreement not realizing what it will cost them down the road. Prenuptials give a couple the opportunity to decide how they will divide their assets before the bitterness and anger of divorce takes over. But forgoing a prenuptial could mean an acrimonious divorce later on.
If a couple is considering a prenuptial, but not sure if they want to go that route, they are urged to consult with a divorce attorney in Valley Stream to explain the many benefits of these agreements.
