Ft. Lauderdale, FL- Alex Borstein, the actress who voices Lois Griffin on Family Guy is the latest celebrity to be headed to divorce court and it looks like her ex might be in for a cherry divorce settlement.
According to TMZ, who broke the story, Jackson Douglas filed for divorce this and since the couple don’t have a prenuptial agreement, Borstein could be giving her ex half of her fortune.
Borstein reportedly earns between $3 and $5 million for each season of Family Guy, pretty hefty chunk
Borstein and Douglas have been married for 15 years and have two children together. TMZ reported Douglas wants joint custody of the couple’s children and is seeking spousal support.
But this divorce probably won’t turn ugly since TMZ reported the couple wants to keep it peaceful for the sake of their children.
This week has seen three high-profile divorces involving well-off female celebs.
Star of “Hairspray” and former talks show host Rikki Lake and her husband Christian Evans filed for divorce this week. The couple had a prenuptial and since Lake is the higher earner, she’ll be paying her ex spousal support for the next two years. Evans is supposedly a jewelry designer, meaning he’s more likely an unemployed artist.
Then there’s Jane Lynch, LGBT activist and star of “Glee” who settled her gay marriage this week for a huge chunk of cash. In addition paying her ex Dr. Laura Embry, a clinical psychologist, a lump sum of $1.2 million, Lynch will have to split just about everything 50/50, including earnings from her TV appearances.
This isn’t the 50s anymore—or the 80s for that matter—so women aren’t only parties in a divorce awarded large settlements. Financial survival in the 21st Century often requires two incomes. Men are no longer exclusively breadwinners, in nearly a quarter of American households, women earn more than their husbands.
A divorce attorney can tell you that the notion men are always the loser in divorce is just wrong. As with Lake and Borstein, a woman can end up being the party that has to split their salary and assets in half. Spousal support is awarded to a spouse when they are unable to support themselves. It is intended to help the non-working or lesser earning spouse maintain their standard of living.
In a recent survey, members of the Matrimonial Attorneys of America found that 47 percent of its family law and divorce attorneys, saw an increase in the number of women who pay alimony or child support to their former spouses.
Women don’t always prevail when it comes to child custody either. Although women are awarded custody more frequently, it’s not a guarantee. If the court believes or is convinced it is in the best interest of the child to live with their father, then the mother might lose primary custody and be ordered to pay child support.
As you can see, women aren’t the only ones who benefit from marrying a wealthy and famous celebrity.
