Los Angeles, CA- It took her over a year, but Demi Moore has finally filed for divorce from Ashton Kutcher. So what took her so long?
Moore’s and Kutcher’s split came as surprise, the couple, who have a significant age gap were together for six years, and their separation took its toll on her.
Kutcher delayed his filing for months—couple split in Sept. 2011. He waited until only filing his official divorce papers in December of last year after he started dating his former co-star from “That 70s Show,” Mila Kunis. Kutcher put of the filing because Moore began having emotional problems which led to a subsequent drug problem.
Last September, a source told US Weekly that Kutcher delayed his own filing because he didn’t want to put pressure in the fragile Moore. He also said that he wanted to work out the financial settlement out of court.
But like many dissolutions, money may prove to be lead Moore’s and Kutcher’s divorce down a contentious path.
When they got together, Kutcher wasn’t as well-known and worth half as much Moore, who was once one of the most sought after actress in Hollywood, but for some reason her work dwindled, perhaps by choice. While her star faded his began to rise, and Kutcher is now a prolific actor, starring in numerous movies and television show; he now makes significantly more than his estranged ex.
Kutcher is the highest paid actor on TV, earning $70,000 for each episode of “Two and a Half Men.” Additionally, he had become very business savvy investing in numerous startups and tech companies.
After entering divorce negotiations, an inside source told the New York Post “Ashton has been very difficult during the talks. You could even say he has become hostile.” When the negotiations began, a source said that Kutcher was unwilling to give Moore the amount of money she was asking for.
The source told the Post that Moore has grown tired of the talks and is ready to move on. Her divorce attorneys could file papers in Los Angeles as early as today. The insiders added, “It’s hoped lawyers for both sides can reach a settlement this spring, otherwise the divorce will go into litigation and trial.”
Kutcher has hired infamous divorce attorney Laura Wasser who is also representing Kim Kardashian. Moore has her own powerhouse attorney, NY’s William Beslow, who recently helped Linda Evangelista with her divorce.
If Moore files in Los Angeles, which is a community property state, Kutcher may have to pay her half of his fortune. The couple apparently did not sign a prenuptial agreement; even if they did it could be challenged in court though it’s very difficult and might have helped them avert a highly-publicized trial.
So many wealthy individuals refuse to sign prenuptial agreements. While they are contracts that seem to be the antithesis of romance, if their marriages do fall apart down the road at least they will have the assurance that their assets will be protected once the love and lust fades.
