NEW YORK – Chris Lighty’s death came as a shock to many last Thursday, but several people are quick to point fingers as to what led the hip-hop mogul to take his own life.
Some have claimed it was Lighty’s IRS tax debt that became too much to bear, while others believe it was his divorce that led him to commit suicide. However, his wife has dismissed the rumors, saying her husband was a caring and smart man.
“My husband was too smart of a man. He was a genius. No smart man is going to leave his children for fighting with his wife,” said Veronica Lighty in an interview with the New York Daily News.
Although the couple fought a lot, Veronica explained that the relationship was actually improving.
“We had a passionate relationship. We fought all the time,” she said, adding that she had halted the divorce during Father’s Day. “I had filed for divorce last year, but retracted it. … That was my gift to him.”
Veronica also dismissed rumors that his death was due to IRS debt. She claims the couple did not owe the $5 million sources claim they did.
Chris Lighty was only 44 at the time of his death. He leaves behind his wife and six children.
