From start to finish, a divorce is a process that can take several years if there is a large amount of property or multiple children involved. Local media for the New York market reported on a lingering property division issue from a celebrity divorce that took over two years to resolve.

Couple will divide millions from the sale of a mansion that took years to sell

The celebrity couple of Anna Faris and Chris Pratt were able to sell off their marital home after being formally divorced for years. The large mansion was initially listed by the celebrity couple in 2018 for about $5 million right around the time their divorce case was being finalized. They had spent $3.3 million in 2014 when it was initially purchased, and much more on renovations and updates to the house. The four bedroom home was built in 1979 in a gated community in Los Angeles, and they were able to accept a final offer of $4.75 million, which was close to their asking price. Both members of the couple are already in new relationships, and the process to unload the home had become a nuisance over the past two years.

Pratt gained fame from hit movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. Faris was most well known for the Scary Movie series and the sitcom called Mom.

Divorces and property division

When a judge goes through a couple’s property, they will classify all items as either marital or separate. Anything that is considered separate property is simple to handle, as one spouse can decide to do whatever they want with it. However, marital property will often need to be sold or liquidated, with the couple splitting the money received between the two spouses. In some situations, the couple can come up with their own settlement agreement regarding all of their property to make this process quicker and less costly.

Preparing for a divorce

If a divorce is upcoming, it is important to get legal representation as soon as possible to protect your interests. Issues such as custody of your children, obtaining your rightful property, and honoring a valid prenuptial agreement can all depend on your family attorney’s skill and preparation for your divorce hearings. Starting this process early is one of the best ways to avoid surprises in the courtroom. Your lawyer can also give more details about how the court procedures will unfold and a timeline to conclude the process.
