New York, NY-Everyone knows divorces can be costly, even if you aren’t wealthy. But once billionaire philanthropist Stewart Rahr’s, divorce is settled, it could be one of the costliest divorces on record. He won’t be alone though as

Rahr’s wife of 43 years filed served him with divorce papers late last week, The New York Post reported. According to the report, Carol Rahr has obtained a tenacious divorce attorney, Robert Stephen Cohen, who previously represented Christie Brinkley when she split with Billy Joel.

Forbes estimated Stewart Rah’s wealth at $1.6 trillion, which he earned by selling his pharmaceutical company Kinray to Cardinal Health in 2010. Rahr has significant assets, as well, including a sizable Trump Park Avenue apartment and a $43 million vacation home in the Hamptons.

In the two years since he sold his business, Rahr has donated more than $25 million to various charities, including $7 million to Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Though inside sources say that the divorce is amicable and assures it won’t turn nasty, Carol Rahr, who stood by her husband as he built his business and raised his two children, stands to get close to half of her husband’s fortune, an estimated $800 billion when the dust settles on their divorce.

In the state of New York, marital assets are typically split 50/50 among the divorcing parties.

Rahr’s attorney, Ben Brafman said “Mr. Rahr intends to act honorably and fairly. He is hopeful and confident that the parties will come to an amicable agreement and that despite their divorce will remain friends in the years ahead,” The Daily Mail reported.

While the soon-to-be-ex Mrs. Rahr stands to receive a huge divorce settlement, there have been a couple of larger divorce settlements.

Australian-born media mogul Rupert Murdoch, whose media conglomerate News Corporation has helped him earn trillions, takes the top spot in the most costliest divorces of all time. In 1999, after 32 years of marriage, Anna Murdoch, Rupert’s second wife and mother of three of his six children settled their divorce to the tune of $1.2 billion, according to CNN Money.

Just 17 days after Murdoch settled with Anna, he married a Chinese-born Wendi Deng who is 38 years his junior.

Saudi Arabian arms dealer and business man Adnan Kashhoggi was once considered one of the world’s wealthiest men, but when he divorced his British-born wife Sandra Daily– who converted to Islam and changed her name to Soraya– Adnan had to pay her $850 million, making it the second largest divorce settlement.

Ranking in at number three would be the divorce settlement of British Formula One Racing magnate Bernie Ecclestone. In 2009, Ecclestone settled the divorce from his second wife of Slavica, a model from Croatia, for a whopping $750 million.

There are many other expensive divorces including those of celebrities and athletes ranging from $450 million to $100 million.

Though there are many high-dollar celebrity divorces. Mel Gibson’s divorce from his first wife Robyn takes the top spot as the most expensive. He settled with Robyn for a staggering $425 million.

As for pro-athletes, Michael Jordan’s divorce from Juanita Jordan cost him $250 million.

Wealthy men have the misfortune of losing a great deal of wealth when they divorce their spouses. But this can be avoided if they sign a pre-nuptial agreement before they tie the knot. These agreements dictate the amount of a divorce settlement and are very hard to challenge in court.
