02 27 12 Divorce Family Law News Blog Internet Obsession Leads to More DivorcesA study conducted by the Family and Social Policy Ministry in Turkey has revealed a new contributing factor toward divorce – the Internet.
Family and Social Policy Minister Fatma Şahin explained that Internet addiction is causing families in Turkey to experience more conflict. Şahin said the Family and Social Political Ministry is planning to help families learn about proper Internet usage.

“Our ministry is studying the issue, and we are planning to conduct a workshop that will include a broader participation than the 25,000 individuals who took part in the survey,” said Şahin.

Although the Internet may have contributed to a greater number of failed marriages in Turkey, the study also showed that family is still the most important part of Turkish society.

Şahin explained that in Europe, 25 out of 1,000 marriages result in divorce while in Turkey, only 16 marriages out of 1,000 dissolve.
“There has been a slight increase in the divorce rate over the past decade, but we should take population growth into consideration in this regard,” Şahin explained.

Other factors that may have contributed to the greater number of divorces in Turkey include greater gender equality, meaning women are feeling more empowered and are more secure being alone.
